SPINAL FLUID PROTEINS MAY HELP IDENTIFY AD
(Source: Reuters Health) Swiss investigators report that the ratio of two
proteins in peoples spinal fluid may help diagnose Alzheimer's disease
(AD).
Phosphorylated tau protein (phospho-tau) and beta-amyloid peptide-42 (A-beta-42) -- have already been linked to Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Christoph Hock of University Hospital Zurich and associates note that measuring levels of either one in spinal fluid has not proven useful in diagnosing AD. However, it is possible that calculating the ratio of one to the other could be helpful in diagnosing the condition.
In a study reported in the Archives of Neurology the researchers studied 100 patients and 31 healthy control subjects. They found that the protein ratio was much higher in AD patients than in the other subjects. At least 80 percent of the time the ratio correctly identified people with AD, while at least 73 percent of the time it correctly identified people without AD.
